Creating a Safer Home for Aging Loved Ones: Why Home Safety Assessments Matter

By KC Carruthers

For many families, planning for the future means more than writing a will or setting up a trust. It often involves making decisions about how and where a loved one will live as they age. While assisted living may be an option for some, a growing number of people are choosing to age in place—remaining in the comfort and familiarity of their own home.

But staying at home safely often requires more than just a desire to do so. It requires a thoughtful look at the home environment itself.

Falls: The Silent Threat Inside the Home

The numbers are eye-opening. According to Age Safe® America:

  • Falls account for 25% of all hospital admissions and 40% of nursing home admissions.
  • 40% of those admitted due to a fall will never return to independent living.
  • 1 in 4 will die within a year of the fall.
  • A fall-related hospital stay averages $30,000, and nationwide, fall injuries cost Americans $60 billion annually, expected to rise above $100 billion by 2030.
  • Most falls—over 75%—occur at home or just outside it, and most are not caused by stairs, but by simple tripping hazards like rugs, cluttered walkways, or poor lighting.

These sobering statistics are especially relevant for families making long-term plans for aging parents, veterans, or loved ones with disabilities or cognitive conditions such as Alzheimer’s or dementia.

What Is a Home Safety Assessment?

A home safety assessment is a proactive, room-by-room evaluation designed to identify and minimize fall risks or other safety hazards. Areas of focus typically include:

  • Trip hazards (loose rugs, cords, thresholds)
  • Bathroom safety (grab bars, non-slip flooring, raised toilets)
  • Lighting and visibility
  • Stairways and railings
  • Kitchen layout and access
  • Outdoor entryways and walkways

By making small but critical changes, many older adults can maintain their independence longer, often delaying or avoiding the need for assisted living.

Who Should Consider It?

  • Individuals over the age of 65
  • Veterans with service-related disabilities
  • People recovering from surgery or illness
  • Caregivers supporting loved ones with dementia or mobility challenges
  • Families looking to plan ahead for safe aging at home
